let's first go to doug cammerer tracking the conditions now. >> we talk about the near-record heat. so far 97, even 98 degrees unofficially at the airport. wait until you see what that official number is. the record today 99, so we may be very close to that record, and i think we will tie a report, if not break it, during the day tomorrow. the heat is definitely on. take a look at these numbers. 91 by 11, up to 97 by 3:00 in the afternoon. temperatures rose very quickly. and the heat index rose just as quickly across the area. right now 97 degrees is the current temperature. with that dew point of 65, that 65 dew point good news, normally we have been thinking terms or dew points would be near 69, 70. that would put our heat index well above 100. current temperature 99 in frederick, 93 in manassas, 99 in fredericksburg, and 97 down towards la plata.

that heed index will -- the heat advisory has been extended through 10:00 tomorrow evening. temperatures tomorrow could be even warmer. we'll talk about it coming up. to have some fun to keep cool. we continue the coverage from great waves water park in alexandria. is it packed there? >> reporter: it sure is. i was able to score some lounge chairs. this is going to be the place to be, right by the wave pool. this water park just opened up for the summer on monday, and already they say they are exceeding expectations, it's all because of the heat. helping to cool the start of the day. >> really hot.

>> let the kids play, jump in the water, get wet. >> reporter: the majority looking for any kind of relief. >> i told my wife today, i said, baby, we've got to get into some water. >> most people got wet with sweat instead. >> hot day. >> this d.c. taco truck is used to serving up meals with a kick, but a smoking grill and four cooks stuffed in the kitchen on wheels made for extra heat today. >> good thing is we're here for a couple hours and then we're out. >> reporter: the summer's first must-have is a water bottle, metro allowing them, breaking the no-drink policy for a couple days. >> customers can bring aboard and consume water in containers so they can stay hydrated. >> reporter: but officials want to make sure people aren't the only ones getting relief. prince georges county animal management says pet owners need to be careful with their animals. they can get sunburn and heatstroke, too. >> make sure he has plenty of

help keep you safe when the temperatures climb. a man is dead after a shooting involving metro transit police. it happened while police were investigating an attempted abduction. jackie benning is live at the seen. >> reporter: we're told police same here this afternoon to the 7100 block about 12:30, in connection with an investigation with what's being described as a possible attempted abduction at the minnesota avenue station in the district sunday evening. now, we can tell you at this time that the metro spokesperson says that the man, who has not been identified, became combative with the detective, and then that man came out of the house with a gun. >> the officer returned fire

striking the suspect and he was pronounced dead at the scene. >> reporter: now we're told there are some possible reports, but they have not been confirmed that the suspect may have tried to run over the detective with his red pickup truck, but that is not confirmed. also witnesses up there at the scene tell us that the back window of the detective's police cruiser was shot out. there are a lot more questions than answers. i'm jackie bensen, because to you. one person is in custody tonight. it happened after 11:00 this morning in the 2400 block of skyland place. a man was shot and then went to the barbershop where he worked around the corner to get help. someone inside called 911 for help. the victim is expected to recover. no word yet on -- a standoff ended withen a arrest. it began around 5:00 this

morning. police say the suspects barricaded himself inside the building. they shut down nearby roads including minnesota avenue, disrupting the morning rush hour. the suspect was wanted in connection to a deadly shooting hours earlier. at this point police have not identified the victim or the suspect. and some breaking news right now. a house subcommittee has just voted to send a resolution to the full householding attorney general eric holder in contempt of progress. they say he has not produced documents they demanded into the gun-running sting operation. democrats say republicans are playing politics. the case against jerry sandusky will be in the hands of a jury tomorrow. today the defense wrapped up their case without putting sandusky on the stand. he's accused of abusing ten boyce over a 15-year span the

brian moore is live outside the courthouse in bellefonte, pennsylvania. brian, how does it read that sandusky himself did not testify? >> reporter: well, barbara, the jurors have been instructed to complete lid disregard that, that sandusky has an absolute, positive constitutional right not to testify in his own defense, but it doesn't look good, he's in effect already testified. the bob costas interviews with nbc, the letters he wrote to some of the accusers in this case. today the defense decided to rest letting supporters speak for him in this case. it's been a very strong presentation by the prosecution. tomorrow closing arguments, jurors have been told to report here at 9:00 a.m. and to expect to stay here, to be sequestered until they reach a verdict. barbara? >> thank you for that report, brian. we'll continue to follow this story. harry thomas jr. is set to begin serving his prison

sentence today. he'll spend 38 months at a minimum security camp. he pled guilty in january to stealing hundreds of thousands of government grants that were supposed to go to youth programs. it was a rough morning on the red line. trains were single tracked because of a third rail issue. metro officials tell us the problem with an insulator caused sparks and smoke. trainings rarn about ten minutes behind schedule. the problem was cleared up around 1:00 this afternoon. metro officials say they expect rush hour to be just fine. next and new at 5:00, stranded drivers, sinkholes and wild animals left to roam the streets. see the damage after fierce flooding slammed partments of minnesota. a local lawmakers driving more than 100 miles an hour, now she's fighting to get the ticket tossed out of court. traffic backed up for miles on the bay bridge for a sight

the mayor of duluth, minnesota, says his city experienced one of the worst storms in 150 years. take a look. in just 24 hours, more than 8 inches of rain fell, causing extreme flooding in some parts of the city. the mayor says tell take a long time to rebuild, but says all resources are out to make for examples as quickly as possible. the lake superior zoo had dozens of animals drown. more animals may have also died, but zoo officials say the park is two thirds under water tonight, preventing them from getting a full count. some of the animals did escape for a time, both a polar bear and seal survived after getting outside the zoo's perimeter. wow, they got hammered there. >> that's incredible. doug, hey, we're getting hammered here too with the heat. >> completely different way.

our country is so big. we have so many things going on. we have the drought and the wildfires in the southwest, the severe flooding into parts of the middle part of the country. then for us it's the heat wave. 97 degrees so far today. i think maybe 98 could be where we top out. that will be one degree shy of a record today. so some record heat across the area, at least close to record heat. you walk outside today, and feel the heat and the humidity with the dew points into the mid to upper 60s today. temperatures looking like this. first look at this picture, hazy hot and humid. winds are calm, so you're not seeing any relief as far as the winds are concerned. even if the shade you will not see much release. right now 91 in winchester, 91 in leesburg. 88 dress at annapolis. 95 in fredericksburg, and 99 up there towards frederick maryland. look at the heat index, 106, and

in washington 104, and la plata, and on the eastern schori at 101 degrees. that's what it feels like out there. so convince again extremely hot afternoon. that's why the heat advisory continues, right on through the day tomorrow. the hide index. 100 to 105. tomorrow's heat index, around 105 for just about everybody, so i think tomorrow will be a little warmer. i they will we'll be just shy of that report, but tomorrow's report only 98 degrees, i expect to tie that in the d.c. area, we'll see if we actually do that. friday, no chance of meeting that report there. friday i expect things to cool off just a bit. storm 4 radar, all clear across the area.

98 in rich morland. 9 toward ocean city. you have to get close to the water. that's not a bad idea. hot and humid, the summer solstice at 709. the sun will said at -- very humid temperatures, very hype conditions overnight. so starting off extremely mussy. the temperatures will rise very fast to near report levels, filing like 100 plus, 93 to about 99 degrees, but we do cool off. this is a quick shot at some heat. then a good chance of showers and thunderstorms.

your feet in a pizza shape, i call it demi 1st, it really isolates your thighs. imagine that seat contracting, and then. thighs and seat are the big push of the class. that's where everyone is shaky and focus on that isolation. >> very, very small movements. so there's never a break. you never let the muscle relax. it's always injure pain or intensity. our mantra is be strong, be focused, be energized. i think that says a lot about the method. it's not an aerobics class, we're not jumping around. really anybody can do it, even though it's challenging. we're isolating one muscle as a time while working every major muscle gripe. >> it's really high energy.

fast forward through the headline. closing arguments start tomorrow in the child sex abuse trials of jerry sandusky. sandusky is accused of abusing ten boys over a 1546 year span. if convicted he could spend the rest of his life in prison. a man is dead after a shooting involving metro transit police. police were investigating the man in connection with an attempted abduction in the northeast over the weekend. officers were forced to shoot back. no officers were hurt. things are back to normal now, but metro red line riders suffered through morning delays. train trains were single tracked

because of the smash and smoke on the third rail. the problem cleared up around 1:00. let's fast forward to the weather. >> the weather out there right now, hot and humid. that's what we've seen all across the area. the heat advisory now extended through the night tonight. out there today we've seen high temperatures approaches the record numbers for the day today. 97 degrees in washington, 99 in frederick, maryland. down toward manassas of 95 degrees. these are the unofficial numbers so far. baltimore coming in at 97 degrees. that heat index over 100 degrees across the area. that includes right here in the center city area of washington, d.c. let's go to eric fisher. he's been in d.c. all day long from the weather channel. >> reporter: heat has been on our minds ever since the word "go." we had record warmer springs, and it really hasn't let up. now finally we're getting that

extreme summertime here around the chesapeake. which have already been seeing the exceptional weather. so it's justin an incredible year for the warnlt. the good news about this one we'll see a few days of heat and then back into the cool zone. if you're going to take some steps, do it now. three days, find the air conditioning, the cooling centers if you need them. if you have a friend who has air conditioning and you don't, call in that favor, and make sure you stay safe in the overnight temperatures. of course, for all the tourists coming from cooler parts of the nation or other countries, really impressing them to make sure you take the proper precautions. i'm eric fisher. doug, back to you. >> thanks, eric. you're right about one thing. this is a quick hitter. in today, here tomorrow, and

then i think it will start to ease as we make our way into the weekend. that forecast is coming up in just a couple minutes. > . today a judge found karen toles guilty of one of the morse serious charges. chris gordon joins us from upper marlboro with the latest on this breaking story. chris? >> reporter: judge megan johnson held a bench trial today, hearing testimony throughout the afternoon from three prince georges county police officers they have testified about the events of february 2 2i, that's when one of the officers, corporal brooks, says he caught video from his cruiser cam of karen tolls doing 108 miles an hour on the beltway, then leaving the off-ramp to braench avenue, culls through traffic,

almost causing an accident, putting in peril life and property. that she did not pull over or stop, and he was chasing her. he called other officers to the scene. when she finally stopped at st. bar bus road, two officers approached her with guns drawn. she said, this is why people hate prince georges county police. she also made other statement, saying she was distracted, she was late for a meeting, she had been using her cell phone and using the mirror in her car to apply makeup. the defense said that they wanted the charges dismissed. the judge denied that request. they said this was double jeopardy, because after the february 22nd incident she paid a fine for changing lanes, and

she shouldn't have been charged for reckless drives. the judge disagreed. fined her $400 and gave her probation before judgment, which means it will be expunged from her record in a year and will result in no points nor in the loss of her license. afterwards. prince georges county police chief had this reaction. here's what he had to say. >> this was an unfortunate situation that's come to a conclusion today. we respect the judge's decision and the judicial problem. mistoles has continued to work with us and the community extremely well, and i expect cooperation on behalf of the citizens to continue. thank you. karen toles, being found guilty of reckless driving today, being fined $402, plus $33 in a court cox, but getting probation before judgment, which

expunges this record, and she will receive no points on her license as a result. she has already gone through driver improvement. that's the latest. chris gordon, news4. speed may be to blame for a deadly crash. police say paul wickwire lost control of his ford explorer, slamming into a fire hide rant, then rolling into a ditch. it happened just before midnight. wickwire was ejected from the suv and died at the scene. a not guilty plea from the maryland man charged in the murder of felicia barnes. michael johnson appeared in a baltimore courtroom yesterday. he's accused of suffocating his ex-girlfriend's half-sister and then dumping her body. barnes was from monday ron, north carolina. she disappeared while visiting baltimore for the christmas

holidays. scherr body was found in the susquehanna river months later. there was a new proposal to spruce up the exterior of the downtown verizon center. some are fighting this move, calls it visual pollution. tom sherwood has more on the debate tonight. >> reporter: as exciting as it can inside the verizon center, the exterior of the 20-000 seat arena is a hodgepodge of old media and vinyl signs draped on the arena. >> we have signs that generate -- and it's too big. >> he says the sports team are seeking an exemption from the billboard law. he says 9 proposed nine video screens would be more attractive, more quiet and more neighborhood friendly. the whole area has been completely rebuilt in part because of the verizon center, which helps generates hundreds of millions in city revenues.

you may not have heard of, thieves stealing used cooking oil to make a quick buck. a restaurant in montgomery county was hit. kitchen miller owns the red rooster on damascus boulevard. he says this shows someone cutting locks on a grease container a. siphoning the grease. it's usually sold to companies that turn it into biofuel. the restaurant hopes someone will recognize the suspect and contact police. an amazing site today. traffic was halted as an oversized cargo ship passed by. while it caused a headache, we explain how it will have a positive impact on maryland. >> reporter: thousands of people set out for some fun in the sun at sandy point state park. >> we just were going to have a day at the beach. >> reporter: witnessed a sight unlike nen over. four super-sized chinese crains came into view as they made

their way through the chesapeake bay and glided unthe bay bridge. >> it's not often you debt to see something like this. >> once in a lifetime. >> reporter: chopper swarmed to get every possible view. traffic backed up for miles as the bridge closed about 45 minutes to ensure safety. each crain weighs about 1500 metric tons. and is tall enough to clear a 14-story building. the air gap sensor on the bridge gives updates every six minutes, so the crew nows house far they were from the very bong of the bridge. it narrowly made its way through. it only has ten feet of clearance on this day. >> we have a whole bunch of smart people taking a look at data such as the water levels, the tides, the occurrence, the wind. >> reporter: the cranes are headed to the seagurt marine

heat advisory continues in effect right on through the day tomorrow for all of the area you see highlighted in the orange. he index from 100 to 105. maybe -- one thing up to make sure, dress in lightweight and light-colored clothing, and drink plenty of water. never drink caffeine, alcohol also not a good idea when you're out and about, do take shade breaks. and do not leave kids in the cars, and of course don't leave the cars in the dogs each. high temperatures. 99 in fredericksburg, the place that everybody needs to go. i think we should all go together, a good chance of storms coming up. right now that water temperature, jim handly, 75 degrees. >> let's go swimming.

>> thank you, doug. weather is not the only story that people are talking about. >> the other trending topics, first a warning for pregnant women. doctors say don't read too much into the study about drinking alcohol. danish researchers assessed their children's iq at the age of 5. the results were similar between the children of mothers who consumed 1 to 8 drinks a week and the children of mothers who didn't drink at all during pregnancy. >> medical experts says the study was limited and the safest advice is to avoid alcohol at all. now a dispute with star jim carrey could be the end of this project. >> he and co-star jeff daniels were expected to start filming in a few months. entertainment tonight is reporting that carrey dropped out, because he felt newline and warner bros. showed a lack of enthusiasm. the original came out in 1994. hey, speaking of sequels,
